A cylinder of 5 litres capacity, filled with air at NTP is connected with another evacuated cylinder of 30 litres of capacity. The resultant air pressure in both the cylinders will be            [BHU 2004]

    A)                 10.8 cm of Hg

    B)                 14.9cm of Hg

    C)                 21.8 cm of Hg

    D)                 38.8 cm of Hg

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

               Given that                    \[{{P}_{1}}=76cm\] of \[Hg\] (Initial pressure at N.T.P.)                    \[{{P}_{2}}=?\], \[{{V}_{1}}=5litre\], \[{{V}_{2}}=30+5=35litres\]                    According to Boyle's law                    \[{{P}_{1}}{{V}_{1}}={{P}_{2}}{{V}_{2}}\]; \[76\times 5={{P}_{2}}\times 35\]                                 \[{{P}_{2}}=\frac{76\times 5}{35}\]Þ \[{{P}_{2}}=10.8cm\] of \[Hg\]
