    (a) The colonial government kept continuous track of all Indian books and newspapers to prevent seditious or anti-government articles from being published.
    (b) To calmp down on the native press they warned the publishers and if warning was ignored, it seized the printing machinery and confiscated printing materials. The govt. passed Vernacular Press Act in 1878 to clamp down the freedom of press.
