The most important kind of flag is the National Flag. Every country has its own flag with its bright colours and outstanding design. A nation's flag symbolises its freedom and its history. Indian National Flag is known as the Tiranga Jhanda, Great Britain's National Flag is known as Union Jack and the National Flag of the United States of America is called the Stars and Stripes.
Most National Flags use one or more of the seven colours. The colours are red, white, blue, green, yellow, black and orange. These colours are often used in a stripe pattern. Flags also use symbols such as the cross, the star and the half moon shape or the crescent. A country's National Flag is always hoisted on the country's National Day. The National Heroes of a country are honoured by the hoisting of flags. In India, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday is celebrated with the hoisting of the Tiranga Jhanda.
A National Flag is respected by lowering it slowly from the flagpole at dusk. It is folded before it touches the ground. People salute the flag when it is hoisted. When a flag is flown at Half-Mast, it means that the country is mourning the death of an important citizen. The Supreme Court of India now allows its people to fly the National Flag in their houses all through the year, so long as they respect it by lowering it at the dusk and hoisting it at the dawn. You too can choose to keep the Tiranga Jhanda flying high.
