In the given figure, the grid consists of unit squares. What is the area of the polygon?

    A)  7

    B)                         9

    C)  12

    D)         15

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The grid consists of each square as unit square. Hence, each side is of a unit length, i.e. 1. Now, the given polygon has two sides parallel. Hence, this forms? a trapezium. Now, Area of the trapezium \[=\frac{1}{2}\times ({{b}_{1}}+{{b}_{2}})\times h\] where, \[{{b}_{1}}\] and  are the lengths of the two parallel sides. As the side on the top of the trapezium covers 3 unit squares, the length of this side is 3 units. i.e.            \[{{b}_{1}}=3\] units. Similarly, the side on the bottom covers 7 unit squares, the length of this side is 7 units. i.e.,            \[{{b}_{2}}=7\] units Again the two parallel sides are away from each other by 3 squares. i.e.,              \[h=3\] \[\therefore \] Area of trapezium \[=\frac{1}{2}\times (7+3)\times 3\]                                 \[=\frac{1}{2}\times 10\times 3=15\]
