    Consider the following statements
    1. Bengaluru receives more rainfall than Mangalore.
    2. In the northern plain of India, the amount of annual rainfall decreases from east to west.
Which of the above statements is/are correct?

    A)  1 only

    B)  2 only

    C)  Both 1 and 2

    D)  Neither 1 nor 2

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Bengaluru receives much less annual rainfall than Mangalore because Bengaluru is in the 'rainshadow area' of the Western Ghats while Mangalore is located on the sea coast. The amount of annual rainfall decreases from east to west in the northern plain of India. This is due to the fact that the moisture of the monsoon wind goes on decreasing towards the west as they lose much of their moisture for causing rainfall in areas falling on their path. For example, Kolkata gets 119 cm, Patna 105 cm, Allahabad 91cm, Delhi 51 cm and Bikaner only 24 cm rainfall during the south-west monsoon period.
