Assertion             :       The change in air pressure effect the speed of sound. Reason                 :       The speed of sound in a gas is proportional to square root of pressure.

    A)             If both assertion and reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion.

    B)             If both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.

    C)             If assertion is true but reason is false.

    D)             If the assertion and reason both are false.

    E)             If assertion is false but reason is true.

    Correct Answer: E

    Solution :

Speed of sound in cases in independent of pressure because \[v=\sqrt{\frac{\gamma \,P}{\rho }}.\] At constant temperature, if P changes then r also changes in such a way that the ratio \[\frac{P}{\rho }\] remains constant hence there is no effect of the pressure change on the speed of sound.
