Sponges are less specialized because they have no tissue system, organ system etc. All animals, particularly the less specialized ones (e.g. sponges) can replace their lost or injured part. The Process is known as regeneration. The sponges, correlated with their low grade of organisation, have a high capacity to regenerate. If an animal is cut into pieces, each piece, however small but carrying amoebocyte and choanocytes, will grow into a complete or full size sponge, if conditions are favourable. Calcium and magnesium ions are necessary for regeneration.
