DIRECTIONS: Passage ? 2: Read the passage(s) given below and answer the questions that follow. \[\frac{2}{3}\] of the pens Mrs. Sonia bought were blue and the rest were red. She gave away \[\frac{3}{4}\] of the blue pens and \[\frac{1}{4}\] of the red pens and had 90 pens left. How many pens Mrs. Sonia bought?

    A) 216

    B)          196

    C) 150

    D)          250

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

    Let total number of pens = x She gave blue pens \[=\frac{3}{4}\left( \frac{2}{3}x \right)\,=\frac{1}{2}x\] She gave red blue \[=\frac{1}{4}\,\left( \frac{1}{3}x \right)=\frac{1}{12}x\] Number of \[=\frac{1}{2}x+\frac{1}{12}\,x=90\] Pens left \[\frac{5x}{12}=90\] \[x=\frac{90}{5}\times 12\] \[=18\times 12=216\] No. of pens she bought = 216
