Discuss briefly the trends in chemical property group-15 (nitrogen family). Why does nitrogen show anomalous behaviour as compared to other member of this group.

    Answer:

Properties of group - 16 elements : (i) The melting point and boiling point of the group ? If elements increase with increase in atomic number down the group. (ii) All the elements combine with hydrogen to form the compounds of the type . e.g. (iii) Oxygen forms only one oxide  whereas other elements form two types of oxide  &  all are acidic.  are stronger acid than . (iv) Oxygen shows valency 2 only due to absence of d-orbital while other elements of this group show valency 2, 4 and 6 due to presence of d-orbital. (b) Tendency of atom to link with one another through sovalent bonds to form chain and rings is called catenation. Tom top to bottom in a group of periodic table atomic size increases while electronegativity decreases. Therefore atenation property also decreases down the group Sulphur  exhibits tendency for catenation but oxygen does not scause oxygen forms stable  bond.
