      (i) Tendency to show - 2 oxidation state diminishes from sulphur to polonium in group 16. Why? (ii) Only higher members of group - 18 of the periodic table are expected to form compounds. (iii)  readily form a dimer whereas  does not.

    Answer:

      (i) From sulphur to polonium electronegativity decrease- hence tendency to show negative oxidation state decreases (ii) Higher members have smaller ionisation enthalpy than lower members and hence they are expected to form compounds. (iii)  has unpaired electron and no octet configuration Hence it forms a dimer to pair the unpaired electron as well as to complete its octet. has unpaired electron but more than 8 electrons hence it cannot dimerise.
