Arrange hydrogen halides in increasing order of (i) thermal stability (ii) reducing power (iii) boiling point and (iv) acidic character.

    Answer:

Increasing order of thermal stability : As the bond length decreases bond dissociation enthalpy increases and correspondingly thermal stability increases.                 (ii) Reducing power :                 This is also due to bond dissociation energy. The greater the bond dissociation energy greater will be the stability and hence weaker is the reducing agent.                 (iii) Boiling point : . From  to  boiling point increases due to increase in size of the molecule which results in increase in the magnitude of van der Waals forces of attraction. But the exceptional behaviour of HF is due to its ability to form intermolecular H-bonding.                 (iv) Increasing acidic character :                 As the bond length increases bond dissociation energy decreases and hence acidic character increases.
