Copper (I) has \[{{d}^{10}}\] configuration while copper (II) has \[{{d}^{9}}\] configuration, still copper (II) is more stable in aqueous solution than copper (I). Assign reason.

    Answer:

\[C{{u}^{+}}\]ion has more symmetrical configuration as compared to \[C{{u}^{2+}}\] ion. It is therefore, expected to be more stable. However, in aqueous solution \[C{{u}^{2+}}\] ion and the corresponding compounds are more stable because of the smaller size of \[C{{u}^{2+}}\] ion and its greater tendency to get hydrated as compared to \[C{{u}^{+}}\] ion.
