D-glucose is an aldohexose? Why does it react with HCN but not with \[NaHS{{O}_{3}}\]?

    Answer:

D-glucose exists in two cyclic forms \[\alpha \]- and \[\beta \]- in which the aldehydic group is involved in the formation of a ring and is not free. Therefore, it does not react with\[NaHS{{O}_{3}}.\]However, with reagents like HCN and phenylhydrazine, the ring structure cleaves and the aldehydic group becomes free. Therefore, D-glucose does react with HCN.
