Formaldehyde gives cannizzaro's reaction while acetaldehyde does not. Why?

    Answer:

Formaldehyde does not have an \[\alpha \]-hydrogen. It therefore, takes part in cannizzaro's reaction when heated with strong NaOH to form a methyl alcohol and sodium formate mixture. Acetaldehyde fails to react since it has \[\alpha \]-hydrogen atoms present.
