12th Class Chemistry Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids / ऐल्डिहाइड, कीटोन तथा कर्बोक्सिलिक अम्ल Question Bank 12th CBSE Chemistry Aldehydes, Ketones

Boiling points of ketones are higher than those of the isomeric aldehydes. Assign reason.

    Answer:

The alkyl group (R) tends to stabilize the \[>C=O\]  group by releasing the electrons (\[+I\]effect) towards the \[s{{p}^{2}}\]hybridized carbon atom. As a result, the polarity of the bond is likely to decrease and stability will therefore, increase. Ketones with two such groups are more stable than the corresponding aldehydes having only one alkyl group. Consequently their boiling points are slightly higher. For example, boiling points of isomeric propanal and propanone are 322 K and 329 K respectively.
