lodoform is prepared by reacting acetone with hypoiodite and not with iodine. How will you account for it?

    Answer:

In the acetone molecules, \[\alpha \]-hydrogen atoms are to be replaced as \[{{H}^{+}}\]ions by the \[{{I}^{+}}\] ions made available by hypoiodite\[\text{(say}\,\,\text{NaOI)}\]. Iodine being non-polar in nature, does not provide \[{{I}^{+}}\] ion for the attack. \[\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}   \\  \text{Acetone} \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}}}\,+\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}   \\  \text{Hypoiodite}\,\,\text{ion} \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{3I{{O}^{-}}}}\,\,\xrightarrow{\,}\,\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}   \\  \text{Tri-iodoacetone} \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C{{I}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}}}\,+3O{{H}^{-}}\]
