Hydrazones of aldehydes and ketones are not prepared in strongly acidic medium. Why?

    Answer:

Hydrazones are formed by reacting carbonyl compounds with hydrazine \[(\overset{\centerdot \,\,\centerdot }{\mathop{N}}\,{{H}_{2}}-\overset{\centerdot \,\,\centerdot }{\mathop{N}}\,{{H}_{2}})\] which acts as a nucleophile. In the strongly acidic medium, hydrazine gets protonated and, therefore, it is not in a position to act as nucleophile. As a result, aldehydes and ketones are not prepared in strongly acidic medium.
