Acetone forms bisulphite compound when heated with sodium bisulphite whereas di-tertiary butyl ketone fails to do so. Explain.

    Answer:

Di-tertiary butyl ketone \[{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}C-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}                 \text{O} \\                 || \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{C}}\,-C{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}\] is a highly sterically hindered compound. The attack of\[HSO_{3}^{-}\] (nucleophile) on the carbonyl group is not possible whereas it can readily take place in acetone.
