Why does phenol give tribromo phenol on bromination with bromine water?

    Answer:

The solvents like  and  are of low polarity which make the medium inert and only monobromo phenol is formed. When it is treated with bromine water it gives tribromo phenol because the high polarity of water molecule ionises phenol to phenoxide ion which increases electron density of benzene ring and increases its electron density.
