Subtraction of two nearly equal quantities destroys the accuracy. Comment.

    Answer:

This is true. For example when \[\text{x}=\text{2}0.\text{86}\]and \[\text{y }=\text{ 2}0.\text{84},\text{ x}-\text{y}=\text{2}0.\text{86}-\text{2}0.\text{84}=0.0\text{2}\]has only one siginificant figure, whereas x, y both have four significant figures each. Hence, it is advisable to measure directly the difference between two nearly equal quantities instead of measuring the quantities and calculating their difference.
