Explain the social changes in London which led to the need for the 'Underground Railway'. Why was the development of the underground railway criticized?

    Answer:

                      (i) British made a million houses most of them were single family cottages. (ii) Now people could not walk to work, and this led to the development of underground railways. (iii) By 1880, the expanded train services were carrying 40 million passengers in a year. Reasons for its criticism: The compartments were full of smoke by pipes used by passengers travelling in the underground trains. (ii) Many felt that 'iron monsters' added to the mass and unhealthiness of the city. (iii) To make approximately two miles of railways, 900 houses had to be destroyed. (iv) Thus, the London tube railway led to a massive displacement of the London poor, especially between the two World Wars.
