      How was Bombay developed?

    Answer:

                      (i) In the l7th century, Bombay was a group of seven islands under the Portuguese. (ii) These islands were gifted to the British King, Charles II on getting married to a Portuguese princess. (iii) The east India Company shifted its base from Surat to Bombay. (iv) Bombay was the major outlet for cotton textile from Gujarat. (v) Later, it functioned as a port through which large quantities of raw materials like cotton and opium would pass. (vi) Gradually, it became an important administrative centre and a major industrial centre.
