Punjab is a state with average annual rainfall of 75 cm but flow with 5 big rivers. Now, green revolution practiced intensively in the state. After 1990s 3 million plus cities are developed in the state and growing rapidly. What would be the state of health of water resource in the state after next 15 year?

    Answer:

As it is mentioned that average annual rainfall is only about 75 cm then it must be a water scarce region. Five big rivers adequately recharge the aquifer or water level underground so ground water availability must be easy and inexpensive. The state has now adopted under green revolution which need intensive irrigation for production of crops. Irrigation may be over-exploited for increasing productivity. So rural area may come under water stress further. It is stated that 3 million plus cities are growing in the state so, over exploitation of ground water is inevitable and after some year the urban area may be come under water stress. The consequences of these activities may be concluded as below (i) As the annual rainfall is low the rate of ground water recharge may not keep pace with rate of exploitation of ground water. (ii) Urbanisation and intensive agricultural pracrics have produce much chemical waste that may pollute the rivers as of dumping ground and fresh water will be in stress in near future. (iii) Per capita availability of fresh water from river and ground water will be gradually reduced and after 10-15 year it will come in the range of water stress level. So, the next 10 to 15 year, the state may manage with its water resource but after that it is sure to face the water scarcity everywhere in the state.
