    Describe the movement of peasants in Andhra Pradesh.

    Answer:

                    (i) In the Gudem Hills of Andhra Pradesh, a militant guerrilla movement spread. (ii) Here, the colonial government had closed large forest areas, preventing people from entering the forests to graze their cattle or to collect fuel wood and fruits. (iii) This enraged the hill people. (iv) Not only were their livelihoods affected but they felt that their traditional rights were denied. (v) When the government forced them to contribute begar for road building, the hill people revolted. (vi) Their leader was Alluri Sitaram Raju, who claimed to have a variety of powers like he could survive even bullet shots. (vii) Raju was highly inspired by the Non-cooperation Movement led by Mahatma Gandhi and persuaded people to wear khadi and give up drinking. (viii) But at the same time he asserted that India could be liberated only by the use of force, not non-violence. (ix) Raju was captured for his guerrilla warfare and executed in 1924, and over time became a folk hero.
