Why is it necessary to have secularism in India?

    Answer:

India is a land of many religions and the country has faced acute communalism at the time of partition. So, it was a challenge for Indian democracy to choose India as a secular state. Our Constitution declares, India as a secular state, i.e., state which observes an attitude of neutrality and impartiality towards all religions. Firstly there shall be no 'state religion' in India. Secondly the state will not compel any citizen to pay any taxes for the promotion or maintenance of any particular religion or religious institutions. Secularism is not just an ideology of some party or people. It is the basis, one of the foundation of our country. To avoid the threat of communalism and maintain the large diverse country our Constitution has choosen secularism for us.
