How do social divisions affect politics? Give two examples.

    Answer:

Combination of politics and social divisions is very dangerous and explosive. If people start competing in terms of some existing social divisions, it can make social divisions into political divisions and lead to conflicts, violence or even disintegration of a country. Example: (i) Northern Ireland: (a) Its population is divided into two major seats of Christianity-53 per cent Protestants and 44 per cent are Roman Catholics. (b) The Catholics were represented by the 'Nationalist Party', who demanded that North Ireland be unified with the Republic of Ireland, a predominantly Catholic country. (c) The Protestants were represented by 'Unionists' who wanted to remain with the UK which is predominantly Protestant. (d) However, hundreds of civilians, militants were killed in the fight between Unionists and Nationalists and between the security forces of the UK and the Nationalists. (e) It was only in 1998, that the UK government and the Nationalists reached a peace treaty after which the Nationalists suspended their armed struggle. (ii) Yugoslavia: Political competition along religions and ethnic lines led in disintegration of Yugoslavia into six independent countries. Such examples tell people that politics and social division must not be allowed to mix.
