What is a Letter Series?

A letter series is a sequence of many elements made of letters of English alphabet only. Such sequence is formed by putting the letters one after another from left to right.

Example:

(i) A BCD (ii)  DCB A (iii) AL BL CB DE Note: An element of a series is a single member (identity) of that particular series.

For example, in a letter series 'A B C D', each A, B, C and D is a single element. Point to be noted that an element can be made with more than one letter. In a series of 'AB LE BE, each AB, LE and BE is a single element.

Properties of Letter Series

A letter series can be in forward order

Look at the following:

• A BCD
• BCDE

Find the next letter in the series given below.

L M N…..........

(a) A                                (b) O

(c) D                                (d) B

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (b) is correct because this is a forward order series of English alphabet in which M comes just after L, N comes just after M and O comes just after N. Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (b).

Which of the following options is the next element of the given series?

L N P   ........

(a) Q                             (b) A

(c) S                                (d) R

(e) None of these

Explanation; Option (d) is correct because every next letter takes place skipping one letter in forward alphabetical order.

Let us see: Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (d).

A letter series can be in reverse order.

Look at the following:

• C B A
• D C B A

Find the next letter in the following series.

E D C ………

(a) A                             (b) B

(c) F                              (d) G

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (b) is correct because this is a reverse order series of English .alphabet. This series starts with E and then comes D, the next letter in reverse order. Just after D, C will be the next letter in the reverse order. Similarly, B comes just after C to fill the blank space.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (b).

Find the next element in the given series.

V U T.........

(a) S                                           (b) P

(c) R                                          (d) U

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (a) is correct because this is a reverse order series of English alphabet. The series starts with V and then comes U, the very next letter in reverse order. Similarly, T comes just after U because T is the very next letter in reverse order of English alphabet. Finally S, the very next letter in reverse order of English alphabet, comes after T to complete the series.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (a).

A single letter series can have more than one series.

Look at the following:

(i) A N B O C

Let us see: Clearly,

1st series:    A B C

2nd series:   N O P

(ii) D P B C Q C B R D A S

Let us see: 1st series:    D C B A

2nd series:   P Q R S

3rd series:    B C D

Find the missing letter

D P C Q ..... R A

(a) B                             (b) A

(c) S                                          (d) E

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (a) is correct. The given series is made of two series.

Let us see: Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (a).

What comes in place of the blank space?

C N D M E L …….

(a) G                             (b) H

(c) O                                (d) F

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (d) is correct. The given series contains two series.

Let us see: Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (d).

Types of Problems

Problems Based on Increasing Order Series

In such series, letters coming later in the English alphabet come after the letters coming earlier in the English alphabet. Such series is also known as forward order series.

Example 1

A B C D...................

Series pattern: In English alphabet,

B comes just after A

C comes just after B

D comes just after C and the series goes on in the same manner

Example 2

B D F H...............

Series pattern: Every next letter in the series takes place skipping one letter.

Let us see: Find the missing letter in the following series.

A, G, L, P..........

(a) T                             (b) S

(c) Z                                          (d) X

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (b) is correct. Let us see the pattern below:

Number of letter skipped between A and G = 5

Number of letter skipped between G and L = 4

Number of letter skipped between L and P = 3

Therefore, the next letter will come after skipping two letters, so the required letter will be S.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (b).

See the following series and find what comes next.

A  D  G.........

(a) B                             (b) E

(c) C                             (d) J

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (d) is correct because of the following pattern of series. Clearly, every next letter takes place skipping two letters.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (d).

Problems Based on Decreasing Order Series

In such series, letters coming later in the English alphabet come before the letters coming earlier in the English alphabet. This series is also called reverse order/backward order series.

Example 1

P O N M..........

Series pattern: P comes just before O

O comes just before N

N comes just before M

Hence, it is a decreasing order series

Example 2

J H F D.........

Series pattern: Every next letter takes place skipping one letter in reverse order it What comes next in the series given below?

E D C........

(a) A                                     (b) F

(c) B                                      (d) G

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (c) is correct as in the reverse order English alphabet,

E comes just before D

D comes just before C

$\therefore$ C comes just before B

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (c).

Choose the missing element

Y…….. S P M

(a) B                                            (b) X

(c) W                                         (d) V

(e) None of these

Option (d) is correct because of the following pattern of the series. Clearly, every next letter in the series takes place skipping two letters in reverse order.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (d).

Problems Based on a Series having Multiple Series

In such problems, the given series is made of the combination of more than one series.

Example 1

E X F Y G Z

Series pattern: Example 2

M L K N I P

Series pattern: 1st series 2nd series: Choose the option that will come next in the below.

P J Q I R H …….

(a) T                             (b) S

(c) U                             (d) V

(e) None of these

Option (b) is correct because the series is a combination of two series.

Let us see: Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (b).

What comes in place of the question mark (?) ?

T C V B X A ?

(a) Y                                     (b) N

(c) Z                                      (d) W

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (c) is correct.

Let us see: 1st series: 2nd series:  C B A (A reverse order series)

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (c).

Problems Based on Series Made of a Single Letter

In such problems, the given series is made of a single letter In other words, only one letter appears again and again in such series.

Example 1

A  AA  AAA .....

Series pattern: Every next element of the given series takes place with one more A.

Example 2

BBBB   BBB   BB ........

Series pattern: Every next element of the given series takes place with one less B.

Example 3

C   CC  CC  CCC  CCC  CCCC

Series pattern: Let us look at the following: 1st series:       C CC CCC

Series pattern: Every next element of the series takes place with one more C (Similar to Ex. 1).

2nd series:       CC CCC CCCC

Series pattern: Every next element of the series takes place with one more C (Similar to Ex.1).

Problems Based on the Combination of Capital

In such problems, the given series is made of small and capital letters.

Example 1

Aa  Bb  Cc  Dd

Series pattern: It is a forward order letter series, in which, every element is a pair of capital and small form of the same letter, and 1st letter of every element is capital and the 2nd Setter is small.

Example 2

MmM  PpP   QqQ

Series pattern: Middle letter of every element is the small form of same capital letter at ends.

Which of the following options is unfit for the series given below?

Tt Aa Mm NN

(a) Tt                                        (b) Mm

(c) Aa                                        (d) NN

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (d) is correct because it is a pair of capital letter N while all other pairs in the series are made of capital and small forms of same letter,

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (d).

Find the missing element.

A a D d G g .......

(a) J                                           (b) m

(c) n                                          (d) B

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (a) is correct. Let us see the reason: 1st series: 2nd Series: Therefore, the two series follow two letters skipping pattern in forward order.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (a).

Miscellaneous Problems

Such problems do not have any fixed pattern. The patterns come before you as a surprise.

Example 1

ACB CB CDS MB

Series pattern: Every element of the series ends with the letter B.

Example 2

AMN LOP DBC

Series pattern: Every element of the series made of three letters,

Find the missing letter in the series given below.

CT M___ OT ET

(a) A                                         (b) C

(c) T                                          (d) M

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (c) is correct because the last letter in every element of the series is T.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (c).

What can be fit in the blank space?

(a) ABD                                     (b) NDC

(c) PQR                                     (d) EGZ

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (b) is correct because each element of the given series had D as its middle letter

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (b).

What comes next in the following series?

AZ BY CX ….....

(a) WX                               (b) DE

(c) DW                              (d) MD

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (c) is correct because the given series is as follows: First element of series consists of first and last letter of alphabet AZ.

Second letter of series consists of second and second last letter of alphabet BY, And so on.

So, fourth element of the series will be DW.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (c).

Find the letter coming in place of the question mark (?).

A C E G ? K

(a) L                                          (b) M

(c) T                                          (d) I

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (d) is correct because of the following reason, Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (d).

Fill the blank circle.

AAB BBC CCD ___

(a) DDE                         (b) EEH

(c) HHG                        (d) JJK

(e) None of these

Explanation: Option (a) is correct because of the following reason,

In the first element of the series, A appears two times and the next Setter is B., in the second element of the series B appears two times and then the next letter is C and so on. Therefore, the fourth element of the series will be DDE.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (a).

What comes next in the series given below?

B D G K……..

(a) P                             (b) C

(c) Q                             (d) R

(e) None of these

Option (a) is correct and the reason is given below: So, every next element in the series takes place skipping 1, 2, 3 and 4 letters, respectively.

Rest of the options is incorrect because of the correctness of option (a).
