Subtraction is the method by which we know the remaining after taken away some quantity from a certain quantity.  

 

 

 Operation of Subtraction on the Numbers  

Subtract 4564569 from 9875469  

 

Step 1:  Arrange the digits of the numerals as per the place value chart.

 Terms related to subtraction: 

• Minuend: The number from which other number is subtracted.
• Subtrahend: The number which is subtracted from the other number.
• Difference: When a number is subtracted from other, the product is called difference.  

 

 

 

 

 Problems Based on Subtraction  

 

 

Subtract 15 lakhs from 12 crores.

 

Solution:

12 crores = 11 crores + 100 lakhs (100 lakhs = 1 crore)

And 100 lakhs - 15 lakhs = 85 lakhs

So, 12 crores - 15 lakhs = 11 crores + 85 lakhs

Thus, Twelve crores - fifteen lakhs = Eleven crore eighty five lakhs =118500000  

 

 

 Word Problems Based on Subtraction  

 

 

The sum of two numbers is 7894562. If one of the numbers is 564897 then find the other.

 

Solution:

Sum = 7894562

One of the numbers = 564897

Therefore, other number = 7894562 - 564897 = 7329665  

 

 

A water tank contains 9800365 litre water. 456876 litre water is replaced by 9864 cubic stones. Find the remaining amount of water in the tank?

 

Solution:

Amount of water in the water tank = 9800365 L After replacing 456876 litre water by cubic stones, remaining amount of  water = 9800365 L - 456876 L

= 9343489 L.  

 

 

  Word Problems Based on Addition and Subtraction  

 

There are two boxes, first box contains only red balls whereas second box contains blue and white balls. Number of red, blue and white balls are 456456, 745879, and 25463 respectively. Jack threw all the white balls out of box. Find the remaining number of balls in the second box.  

 

Solution:

Second box contains two types of coloured balls blue and white. Jack threw all the white coloured balls out of box.

Therefore, number of balls in the second box = Total number of blue balls. = 745879  

 

 

A and B represents two different villages. Population of the village A is 758945 in which 548796 are educated. Population of the village B is 879456 in which 256456 are educated. Find the total number of uneducated people.  

 

Solution:

Number of uneducated people in the village  A = 758945 - 548796 = 210149  

Number of uneducated people in the village B = 879456 - 256456 = 623000 

Therefore, total number of uneducated people = 210149 + 623000 = 833149 .  

 

 

 

• Addition is the operation to know the total quantity when two or more than two quantities are taken together.
• The numbers which are added together called addend and the problems is called sum.
• When two or more than two numbers are added, the product is called sum.
• Subtraction is the method by which we know the remaining after taken away some quantity from a certain quantity.
• The sum of a number and 0 is equal to the number itself.
• The result of subtractions is called the difference between the numbers.
