Introduction

SI unit (Standard International unit) of time is second. We know that 60 seconds = 1 minute and 60 minutes = 1 hour. Calender that we use today is actually adopted from gregorien calender.

 

Time Indicating Watch

Watch indicates time. The face of watch is called its dial. Dial of a watch is divided into twelve big divisions from 1 to 12. The gaps among the numbers are divided into five small divisions each of which indicates a minute.

A watch shows the time of a quarter past 3. Which one of the following is correct for the time as quarter past 3?

            (a) 3: 15                                                            (b) 3: 45

            (c) 2: 45                                                            (d) 3: 25

Ans.     (a)

            Explanation: Quarter past 3 is 15 minutes above 3 o' clock.

Time shown by a clock is quarter to 5. Which one of the following is correct about the time shown by the clock?

            (a) 4: 15                                                            (b) 4: 45

            (c) 4: 55                                                            (d) 4: 15

            (e) All of these

Ans.     (b)

            Explanation: Quarters to 5 is 15 minutes less than, 5 o? clock.

 

Ante Meridian (A.M.) and Post Meridian (P.M.)

A day is divided into two parts, day and night and there are 24 hours in a day. The time of a day is divided into two parts A.M and P.M. The time from 12 midnight to 12 noon is denoted by A.M (Ante meridian). P.M (Post meridian) is used for the time from 12 noon to 12 midnight.

What is the difference between half past 10 and quarter to 9?

            (a) 1 hour and 45 minutes                                    (b) 1 hour and 55 minutes

            (c) 2 hours and 10 minutes                                   (d) All the above

            (e) None of these

Ans.     (a)

            Explanation: Half past 10 is 10: 30 and quarter to 9 is 8: 45,

 

Calendars

 

The name of days and months are arranged in a proper way in the calendars. In the given calendar, the name of the days are arranged in upper row for every month in the year. Clearly there are 52 weeks and a day in the year 2017.
