Sentences

Sentence: A group of words which makes complete sense is called a sentence.

There are two parts of a sentence:

(a) Subject

(b) Predicate

Let us look at the following examples to understand both the parts:

(a) A big saint                             came up the valley.

Subject                                         Predicate

(b) A pretty girl                         is smiling.

                Subject                                           Predicate

The above given sentences indicate that the nouns in the sentences are subjects and the verbs and objects are predicates.

Sentences can be broadly classified into five kinds:

1.            Assertive sentences

2.            Imperative sentences

3.            Interrogative sentences

4.            Exclamatory sentences

5.            Optative sentences
