Water

More than two third of the earth is covered with water. Water is found in rivers, lakes, oceans, seas, etc. These are called water bodies.

Most of the water on the earth is salt water. Salt water is filled with salt and we cannot drink it. We need fresh water to drink, which is only a very little portion of all the available water on earth.

Again, of the available fresh water, a major portion is glacier ice, at the north and south Poles. It is too far away from where most of the people live. Therefore, we cannot use it.

Uses of water

  • Drinking
  • Washing
  • Bathing
  • Transportation
  • Heating and cooling
  • In industry and for many other purposes.

Air

Air is all around us. We cannot see it. But we can feel it. Moving air is called wind. A gentle wind is called breeze. When wind blows very fast, it is called storm.

Air is very necessary for all of us to live. We take in air when we breathe. But the air we breathe must be clean and fresh. Unclean air makes us sick. We get fresh air from trees and plants. Now-a-days air in cities and town has become polluted because of too many vehicles and fewer trees.

Weather

Our earth is surrounded by air. Sometimes this air becomes cold, sometimes hot. Sometimes we have rain, sometimes it is neither too hot nor too cold. This condition of a place, at any given time, is called weather.

There are 12 months in a year. Some months are hot, some are cold. Some months are rainy. These changes are called seasons. There are mainly four seasons. These are summer, winter, autumn and spring.

Summer

Summer is a hot season. In India, May and June are the hottest months. During these months hot winds called 'loo' blows in some places. People wear light cotton clothes. They have ice creams and cold drinks. During this period, people also use fans and coolers to keep them cool.
