The carbon atoms in an alkane molecule may be classified into four types as primary \[(1{}^\circ ),\] secondary \[(2{}^\circ ),\] tertiary \[(3{}^\circ ),\] and quaternary \[(4{}^\circ ).\] The carbon atoms in an organic compound containing functional group can be designated as a, b, g, d.
