Express the following as mixed fractions. (a) \[=\frac{6}{8}\] (b) \[=\frac{9}{12}\] (c) \[=\frac{12}{16}\] (d) \[=\frac{15}{20}\] (e)\[\frac{6}{8}\] (f)\[\frac{9}{12}\] TIPS To express an improper fraction as a mixed fraction, firstly divide the numerator by denominator to obtain the quotient and the remainder. Then, Mixed fraction = Quotient\[6\times 12=72\]

    Answer:

    (a) We have, \[8\times 9=72\] \[\because \] On dividing 20 by 3, we get quotient = 6, remainder = 2 \[\frac{6}{8}\] \[\frac{9}{12}\] i.e. 6 whole and \[\frac{2}{3}\] more (b) We have,\[\frac{9}{12}\] \[\frac{12}{16}\] On dividing 11 by 5, we get quotient = 2, remainder = 1 \[9\times 16=144\] \[12\times 12=144\] i.e. 2 whole and \[\because \]more (c) We have,\[144=144,\] \[\frac{9}{12}\] On dividing 17 by 7, we get quotient = 2, remainder = 3 \[\frac{12}{16}\] \[\frac{12}{16}\] i.e. 2 whole and \[\frac{15}{20}\] more (d) We have, \[12\times 20=240\] On dividing 28 by 5, we get quotient = 5, remainder = 3 \[16\times 15=240\] \[\because \]\[240=240,\] i.e. 5 whole and \[\frac{12}{16}\]more (e) We have,\[\frac{15}{20}\] \[\frac{2}{3}\] On dividing 19 by 6, we get quotient = 3, remainder = 1 \[\frac{1}{5}\] \[\frac{3}{5}\]i.e. 3 whole and \[\frac{5}{9}\] more (f) We have, \[\frac{2}{3}\] On dividing 35 by 9, we get quotient = 3, remainder = 8\[\frac{2}{3}=\frac{2\times 2}{3\times 2}=\frac{4}{6};\] \[\frac{2}{3}=\frac{2\times 3}{3\times 3}=\frac{6}{9};\] \[\frac{2}{3}=\frac{2\times 4}{3\times 4}=\frac{8}{12}\] i.e. 3 whole and \[\frac{2}{3}=\frac{2\times 5}{3\times 5}=\frac{10}{15};\]more
