How do atomic radius vary in a period and in a group? How do you explain the variation?

    Answer:

Within a group, the atomic radius increases down the group. This is because a new energy shell is added in each succeeding element which decreases force of attraction towards nucleus. In a period, the atomic radius decreases from left to right as effective nuclear charge increases from member to member.
