    Read the storyboard on how a new law on domestic violence got passed. Describe in your own words the different ways in which women's groups worked to make this happen?  

    Answer:

     In a women organisation, some women complained that they were beaten, ill-treated or abused in their homes. Public Hearing was held for this and it was realized that women want protection against being beaten, the right to continue living in a shared household and often temporary relief. The need for new law was raised in different forums. Press conference was held to make the people aware regarding the need of law against Domestic Violence. Several women's organisations. National Commission for women made submissions to the Parliamentary Standing Committee. In 2002, the Standing Committee submitted its recommendations to the Rajya Sabha and these were also tabled in the Lok Sabha. After being passed in both the houses of Parliament, it went to the President for his assent. Finally, the protection of women from Domestic Violence Act came into effect in 2006.
