".....Mr. Purcell heard it no more than he would have  heard the monotonous ticking of a familiar clock." (i) What does 'it' refer to?   (ii) Why does Mr. Pucell not hear 'it' clearly?

    Answer:

    (i) 'It' refers to chriping and squealing and moaning to birds and animals which Mr. Purcell kept in his shop. (ii) As Mr. Purcell is familier to these sounds, he does not pay much attention to them.
