    1. Biodegradable organic matter:   Lot of oxygen of water in used by the micro-organisms in decomposition of organic compounds which cause sharp decline in dissolved oxygen and causes increased fish mortality and disturbance of aquatic food chains.
    2. Inorganic nutrients e.g., nitrates and phosphates:     Cause rapid growth of algal forms and other aquatic plants in the water body, called cultural or accelerated eutrophication. Excessive growth of the plank tonic algae is called algal blooming.
    3. Pathogenic micro-organisms: These, in turn, decrease the quality of water, increased death of aquatic organisms, or may be toxic for human beings. Consumption of such contaminated water may cause infectious diseases like cholera, typhoid, jaundice, dysentery, etc.
