11th Class Chemistry The p-Block Elements-I

  • question_answer 23) If B-Cl bond has a dipole moment, explain why\[BC{{l}_{3}}\] molecule has a zero dipole moment?

    Answer:

Due to electro negativity difference between B and Cl, the bond B-Cl is polar and has a dipole moment. The overall dipole moment of a molecule depends upon its geometry. As \[BC{{l}_{3}}\] has a triangular planar geometry, the overall dipole moment of the molecule is zero.
