  • question_answer 108)
Identify the most stable species in the following sets of ions giving reasons : (i) \[\overset{+}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}}}\,,\overset{+}{\mathop{C{{H}_{2}}Br}}\,,\overset{+}{\mathop{CHB{{r}_{2}}}}\,,\overset{+}{\mathop{CB{{r}_{3}}}}\,\] (ii) \[\overset{O-}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}}}\,,\overset{O-}{\mathop{C{{H}_{2}}Cl}}\,,\overset{O-}{\mathop{CHC{{l}_{2}}}}\,,\overset{O-}{\mathop{CC{{l}_{3}}}}\,\]

    Answer:

        (i) \[\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,{{H}_{3}}>\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,{{H}_{2}}Br>\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,HB{{r}_{2}}>\overset{+}{\mathop{C}}\,B{{r}_{3}}\] (Decreasing stability) Bromine being electronegative, will increase the positive charge of carbocation hence will decrease its stability. (ii) \[\overset{-}{\mathop{C}}\,{{H}_{3}}>\overset{-}{\mathop{C}}\,{{H}_{2}}Cl<\overset{-}{\mathop{C}}\,HC{{l}_{2}}<\overset{-}{\mathop{C}}\,C{{l}_{3}}\] (Increasing stability) Chlorine being electronegative, will decrease the negative charge of carbanion hence will increase its stability.
