Why is it necessary to use acetic acid and not sulphuric acid for acidification of sodium extract for testing sulphur by lead acetate test?

    Answer:

For testing sulphur, the sodium extract is acidified with acetic acid because Load acetate is soluble and does not interfere with the test. If \[{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] were used, lead acetate itself will react with \[{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\] to form white ppt. of lead sulphate which interfere with the test. \[\underset{Lead\,acetate}{\mathop{Pb{{(C{{H}_{3}}COO)}_{2}}}}\,+{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}\to \underset{\begin{smallmatrix} Lead\,sulphate \\ (White\,ppt.) \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{PbS{{O}_{4}}}}\,\downarrow 2C{{H}_{3}}COOH\]
