What do you understand by the term autoprotolysis' of water? What is its significance?

    Answer:

Autoprotolysis is a reaction in which two same molecules react to give ions with proton transfer. Water undergoes autoprotolysis, i.e., a proton from one water molecule is transferred to another water molecule. \[{{H}_{2}}O(l)+{{H}_{2}}O(l)\underset{{}}{\leftrightarrows}{{H}_{3}}{{O}^{+}}(aq)+O{{H}^{-}}(aq)\] On account of autoprotolysis, water is amphoteric in nature, i.e., it reacts with both acids and bases. \[{{H}_{2}}O+N{{H}_{3}}\to NH_{4}^{+}+O{{H}^{-}}\]
