Write four characteristics of p-block elements.

    Answer:

Four characteristic properties of p-block elements. (i) Except F and inert gases, p-block elements show a number of oxidation states from +n to (n-S) where n is the number of electrons present in the outermost shell. (ii) p-block elements have general outer shell electronic configuration\[n{{s}^{2}}n{{p}^{1-6}}\]. The number of electrons in penultimate shell is either 2 or 8 or 18. (iii) Most of the elements are electronegative. The electronegativity increases in a period and decreases in a group. (iv) The p-block elements show covalency but higher members can show electrovalency also. The highly electronegative elements can show electrovalency by accepting electrons. Some members also show coordinate valency.
