Social change which led to the need of the underground railway was mainly industrialization was the major factor responsible for urbanization in London. London continued to expand and its population multiplied fourfold. Due to this, city had extended beyond the range where people could walk to work. So, the planners realized the need for a means of public transport. The development of the Underground was criticized because   • The development of railway led to a massive displacement of the poor.   • To make approximately two miles of railway about 900 houses had to be destroyed.   • Many felt that the "iron monsters" added to the mess and unhealthiness of the city.
