     Types of Sentence

•  Steve is very happy today.
•  Smith eats mangoes.
•  Who has broken the table?
•  What do you want to know?
•  Shut the door.
•  Please call the doctor at once.
•  Don't drink this water.
•  Hurrah! The bird is alive.
•  What a great fall!
•  May you get a job soon?

       The above given sentences give different expression

•  Sentences 1 and 2 express statements in general way.
•  Sentences 3 and 4 express questions.
•  Sentences 5, 6 and 7 express an order, a request or a prohibition.
•  Sentences 8 and 9 express happiness and surprise.
•  Sentences 10 express a wish or a desire.  

     On the basis of this a sentences can be divided into five kinds:

1.  Statement                               (Or Assertive Sentence)
2.  Question                                  (Or Interrogative Sentence)
3.  Command                               (Or Imperative Sentence)
4.  Exclamation                            (Or Exclamatory Sentence)
5.  Optative                                   (Or Optative Sentence)  

      Statement

(Assertive Sentence): The sentences that express something in a general way are called statements or Assertive sentences.  

•  An elephant is a large animal.
•  My grandfather lives in the village.
•  The servant has not come yet.
•  Mohan does not like coffee.  

NOTE: Assertive sentence ends with full stop.  

     There are two types of statements

•  Affirmative Statement
•  Negative Statement  

Affirmative Statement: The sentence which affirms something is called Affirmative Statement.

•  Mohan was driving a car.
•  The enemy surrendered.  

These sentences affirm something. So these are Affirmative Statements.

Negative Statement: The sentence which denies something is called Negative Statement.

•  Aryan was not driving car.
•  The enemy did not surrender.

These sentences deny something. So these are Negative Statements. In a Negative Statement 'no' is used.  

      Question

(Interrogative sentence): The sentence which asks or enquires something is called a Question or an Interrogative Sentence.    

•  Is he attending the class regularly?
•  Do you want to work with them?
•  What do you know about her?
•  Why are you going there?  

The above given sentences ask something. These are Questions.

     NOTE:

• A question begins with either Helping Verb (is, am, are, was, were, has, have, had, do, does, did, can, will, shall, may, etc.) or Question word (What, where, how, when, whom, which, why, etc.)
• Interrogative sentences have always Q. Mark (?) at the end.  

      Command

(Imperative sentence): The sentence which expresses an order, a request, anadvice or a prohibition is called Command or an Imperative Sentence.  

•  Read this book.
•  Please help me.
•  Go for morning walk every day.
•  Don't abuse anyone.  

The above given sentences express an order, a request, an advice and a prohibition. These are Commands.

     NOTE :

•   A command has a hidden subject which remains in Second Person.                       

For example: Come soon means: You come soon.

•  The subject 'you' is generally hidden here.  

      Exclamation

The sentence which expresses sudden or strong feeling of heart is called Exclamation or an Exclamatory Sentence.  

•  Hurrah! We have won the match.
•  Oh! He is in adversity.
•  What a courageous act!
•  Bravo! James has achieved the milestone of his life.

The above given sentences express happiness, sorrow, surprise and admiration. These are sudden or strong internal feelings of heart. These are Exclamations.

NOTE: A mark of Exclamation (!) is put after the Exclamatory word or sentence.  

      Optative

The sentence which expresses wish, desire or pray is called Optative or Optative Sentence.  

•  May God bless the poor!
•  May this country be prosperous!
•  May you live long!
•  Wish you a very Happy New Year!  

The above given sentences express wish, desire and pray. These are optative sentence.  

NOTE: Optative sentence ends with exclamatory mark!
