 The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has extended the tenure of Sandip Pradhan as Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) by two years. The extended tenure will come into effect from 6 June 2020. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for extension.

The 36th National Games, planned for October-November in Goa, was deferred indefinitely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Games organising board has chosen to defer National Games due to COVID-19 pandemic. Committee to convey a social event in September end and decide on fixing dates for National Games. (Goa) Government to require guidance from Union Sports Ministry, need four months notification ahead of time to compose games. The last edition of the Games was held in 2015 in Kerala.

 American tennis player Jamie Hampton has proclaimed that she is taking retirement from the professional tennis. Former World Top 25 player played her last official match 6 yrs ago when she was ranked 24th in the world. The right hander player then suffered numerous injuries and was unable to play against Venus Williams in the semi finals of ASB Classic in Auckland in 2014. Jamie Hampton has also reached one WTA doubles final alongside Anna Tatishvili where they finished as runners-up. She won five International Tennis Federation titles during her professional tennis career.

 Spanish football player and Athletic Bilbao striker Aritz Aduriz has announced his retirement citing medical reasons. He has won 13 caps for Spain and also become the Spain’s oldest goalscorer in 2016, scoring at the age of 35 years and 275 days. Aritz Aduriz has scored 141 goals in 296 appearances for Bilbao and has also represented Real Valladolid, Real Mallorca and Valencia. He is also the only player other than Lionel Messi to score goals in 15 LaLiga seasons in a row.

  Defending champions Australia wins Women’s T20 World Cup 2020. Australia bowled India out for 99 runs to clinch the final by 85 runs for a record-extending fifth Women’s T20 World Cup title at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Australia. Beth Mooney has been adjudged Player of the Tournament & Alyssa Healy has been adjudged the Player of the Match. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 was the seventh edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup tournament. It was held in Australia from 21 February to 8 March 2020. The final match of the tournament was held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The schedule of the final match of the tournament coincided with the occasion of International Women’s Day. The tournament featured 10 teams namely: India, Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa, England, West Indies, Pakistan &  Thailand.

  West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard has become the 1st player in the history of T20 (Twenty20) cricket to feature in 500 matches during the field against Sri Lanka for the first T20I in Pallekele, Srilanka. The jersey had the all-rounder’s name at the back along with the number 500. Dwayne Bravo is second in the list with 453 matches under his belt so far. Chris Gayle is at the third spot in the list as he has featured in 404 T20 matches. 

  Tasnim Mir and Mansi Singh of India has won the bronze medal each in the girls’ singles Badminton event at the Yonex Dutch Junior International 2020. The BWF Yonex Dutch Junior International was held in Haarlem, Netherlands. This was the first instance when Indian shuttlers has won two bronze medals in girls’ singles at this BWF Junior International Grand Prix tournament. Korean shuttler So Yul Lee defeated Indian shuttler Tasnim Mir by 21-19, 22-10 in the semifinals. Indonesian shuttler Saifi Rizka Nurhidayah defeated Indian shuttler Mansi Singh in the semifinals with a score of 21-11 & 21-16.

  The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has announced the first edition of the Khelo India Women’s Hockey League Under-21 in association with Hockey India. The inaugural edition of the Khelo India Women’s Hockey League Under-21 will be organized by the Hockey India. The league will be organised in three phases. First phase of the league will be held at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi while the second phase will be held at the SAI Centre in Bengaluru. The final phase will be held at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
  • About Khelo India Women’s Hockey League Under-21:
The first season of the league will feature the participation of 14 teams. These 14 teams will be further divided into pools of seven teams each following a round-robin format. Each team will play a total of six matches each in both the phases.

  The Badminton Asia Championships will be held in the capital of Philippines i.e. Manila. The Badminton Asia Championship was earlier scheduled to be held in Wuhan, China. Due to Novel Coronavirus outbreak in China, the Badminton Asia has took a decision to move the Badminton Asia Championships from Wuhan to Manila. The Novel Coronavirus outbreak has caused cancellation, postponement or shifting of the several badminton tournaments as well as other tournaments in recent weeks all over the world.

  All India Police Athletic Championship 2019 has commenced in the Panchkula District of Haryana. This is the 68th edition of All India Police Athletic Championship. The championship aims to enhance India’s performance in the Olympics scheduled to be held in 2028. To achieve this feat, the Government of India has identified more than 15,000 children and has also commenced their training. These selected children are receiving their training in 284 Sports Authority of India (SAI) training centres across the country. The Government of India is also planning to assign few games to the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and State Police organisations to achieve good results in Olympics scheduled to be held in 2028.
