  12th National Tribal Youth Exchange Programme begins in Puducherry. Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Dr Kiran Bedi inaugurated this Programme. Two hundred youths from Naxal-affected districts of Chattisgarh are taking part in this week-long programme. The programme has been jointly organized by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS) and Puducherry Government with a view to ensuring development and empowerment of the tribal youths. They will be visiting many places to know about the language, customs, culture, arts, dressing patterns, food pattern and other aspects of Puducherry.

  The 1st edition of Krishi Manthan– the largest Food, Agri-business and Rural Development Summit of Asia begins in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This summit is organized by Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. It is an exclusive platform for industry, academia, and policymakers to share ideas, knowledge, and expertise to create solutions. More than 1,500 delegates including students and academicians are participating in the event organized by the Food and Agribusiness Committee of IIMA.

  Union Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel launched an exhibition titled “Indian Heritage in Digital Space” at National Museum, New Delhi. This exhibition is first of its kind in the country. The exhibition will stay online until February 15, 2020.  
  • What technologies used in this exhibition?
The technologies are used to create the models of Heritages were developed by the IHDS programme. IHDS is an initiative of Department of Science and Technology. Its aims to create 3D LASER scan data, holographic projections, AR and 3D fabrication to showcase the glory of heritages. It has so far created a reconstruction of Hampi and other five Indian monuments namely Taj Mahal, Sun Temple, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Ramachandra Temple and RaniKiVav Patan. The exhibition also consists of a special installation called “VIRAASAT”. Viraasat in Hindi means heritage. It provides mixed reality experience to visitors through 3D printing.
  • History of National Museum, New Delhi
The National Museum blueprint for establishing was prepared by the Maurice Gwyer Committee in May 1946. The Exhibition of Indian Art consisting of selected artefacts from various museums of India was organized by the Royal Academy, London with the cooperation of Government of India and Britain. On August 15, 1949, National Museum, New Delhi was inaugurated in the Rashtrapati Bhawan by Shri C. Rajagopalachari, the Governor-General of India. The foundation of the present building was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India, on May 12, 1955. The 1st phase of the National Museum building was formally inaugurated by Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the Vice President of India, on December 18, 1960. The second phase of the building was completed in 1989.

  The 7th Conference of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region will start in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will inaugurate the Conference. The main theme of the conference is the ROLE OF LEGISLATORS. In the Conference, delegates will discuss the Capacity Building of Legislators for Scrutinizing Budgetary Proposals and Enhancing Focus of Legislators on Legislative Business.

  Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan will be inaugurated “Saksham” campaign. “Saksham” is a fuel conservation mega campaign of Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA). This campaign aims to spread the message of fuel conservation and greener environment across India. Petroleum Conservation Research Association has been creating awareness in the public about the need for fuel conservation and adopting tips for saving fuel. This campaign carries out various activities like ‘Saksham’ cycle Day, cyclotrons, seminars for housewives on adopting the simple fuel-saving measure.

  The 6th meeting of the Island Development Agency (IDA) was chaired by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi. The Island Development Agency analysed the developments taken place in favour of the programme “Holistic development of islands”. NITI Aayog has been given the onus of steering the process of “Holistic Development of Islands”. During the meet, initiatives of sustainable development in the identified Islands were taken under Island Development Agency. The initiatives aims to create jobs for the island population by promoting tourism as well as boosting the seafood and coconut-based products export from the Island. The above initiative will be implemented in 5 islands of Lakshadweep as well as 4 islands of Andaman & Nicobar. To strengthen the infrastructure on Islands, projects would be set up to improving air, sea and digital connectivity. By June 2020, Port Blair including 7 other islands in Andaman & Nicobar would be digitally connected via submarine optical fibre cable which would also increase the number of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) in Islands.

 India’s Statue of Unity has become the part of ‘8 Wonders of SCO’ list. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has included the Statue of Unity in its ‘8 Wonders of SCO’ list. The Statue of Unity is the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, first Home Minister of the independent India. The 182 metre tall statue is the world’s tallest statue located in Kevadia, Gujarat. The statue was inaugurated on 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 2018.

  On January 13, 2020, the Indian Aviation Ministry announced that registration of all drones in the country is mandatory. The Ministry has given January 31, 2020 as deadline for the users to register their drones.
  • Highlights
Every drone is to be provided with a Unique Identification Number (UIN) under the scheme. GoI has opened an online portal called “digital sky” for the users to register their drones. Upon registration, the users will be provided with UIN, Unmanned Aircraft Operator Limit (UAOP), ownership acknowledgement number and Drone acknowledgement number.
  • Legislation
The drone owners failing to register their drones will face actions under the Aircraft act, 1934 and Indian Penal Code. The aircraft act governs aviation in India.
  • Significance
According to the FICCI committee on drones, there are 50,000 to 60,000 illegal drones in the country. Also, the latest drone tragedies across the world has forced the GoI to hasten its actions towards regulation of drones. In December 2018, the world’s second busiest airport, the Heathrow airport remained closed for 3 days after multiple rogue drones were seen flying over the perimeter. Around 1000 flights were cancelled. Major General Soleimani was killed by the US military drone fired missile in Baghdad airport in January 2020.

  Union Minister of Steel launched mission PURVODAYA for the development of eastern India through integrated steel hub in Kolkata, West Bengal. Under this mission, the government aims to transform logistics and utility infrastructure which would change the socio-economic landscape in eastern India. This mission also includes the growth of the steel industry along with employment opportunities across the entire value chain. The Purvodaya in the steel sector is aimed at driving the accelerated development of Eastern India through the establishment of an integrated steel hub. Eastern states of India West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Northern part of Andhra Pradesh collectively hold 80% of the country’s iron ore, 100% of coking coal and a significant portion of chromite, bauxite and dolomite reserves.

 The NIIT (National institute of Information Technology), a multi-national company has been selected as one of the EdTech companies for the NEAT initiative. The NIIT will work with AICTE to implement the vision of Ministry of HRD (Human and Resource Development) on NEAT. 
  • Highlights
In order to make the NEAT initiative successful, the Ministry of HRD along with NIIT will institute 5 awards of Rs 50,000 for faculties and 10 awards of Rs 10,000 for students. NIIT was established in 1991. It is a non-profit university of higher education and research.
  • NEAT
The National Educational Alliance for Technology (NEAT) was launched to customize learning process using Artificial Intelligence. The Union Government believes that the AI methodologies can be used to address diversity in learners. (Diversity in learners is recognizing that everyone is unique in their own way) The initiative through PPP model aims at creating EdTech Companies. These identified EdTech companies will create National Alliance with the emerging technologies.
  • Features of NEAT
NEAT will create a common one-stop access to technological solutions. The solutions will be developed by the EdTech companies. The institutes developing solutions are free to charge the companies according their policy. The NEAT programme is being implemented by AICTTE.
