Years later, in 1960, the Ayurvedic College was converted to the College of Medical Sciences with Professor K.N. Uduppa as its founder principal. In 1963, MBBS training of BHU got recognition from the General Medical Council, U.K. and the Medical Council of India. The postgraduate medical education which started as in-service programme in 1963, took the form of a formal training programme in 1971 and thereby upgrading College of Medical Sciences to the Institute of Medical Sciences (in 1971). In 1978, the existing Faculty was bifurcated into the Faculty of Ayurveda and Faculty of Medicine to facilitate their independent growth. Today, the Faculty of Medical Science has 33 Departments of Modern Medicine including 10 Departments of Super-specialties.
The courses offered by Faculty of Medicine BHU, include MBBS (84 students), BDS(38), B.Pharma (33), MD/MS (87 students in 22 subjects), DM/MCh (22 students in 11 subjects), MSc in Health Statistics (10 students) and PhD in all the subjects. The Faculty of Dental Sciences offers MDS in Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry (one student each). These are some of the brightest young minds in the country and abroad, who have joined this University after clearing a rigorous All India Entrance Test.

As a career, Medicine is one of the most sought after, and rewarding for those interested in Science, and dealing with sick people. A doctor's profession involves a lot of hard work, but provides the noble satisfaction of curing patients, at times even saving lives. For practicing as a physician or surgeon, one needs to have completed the MBBS course from a recognised medical college and must possess a license from the State Medical Council to practice.
As a profession, Medicine offers maximum opportunity for growth. Over the years, the field of medical studies has undergone enormous stages of development, and it has become so vast that specialisations within it have been growing day-by- day. A simple degree in medicine today is not enough for making a successful and a satisfactory career. One needs to do specialisation in any of the branches of medicine or surgery to become a specialist of certain kind.
There are various areas of specialisation available for the doctors. After doing MBBS, candidates can go for post graduate level studies (MD or MS). Post Graduate Programmes (MD or MS) is usually of 3 years duration. There are also Super Specialisations which require a further 3 to 5 years of study.
Those with Post Graduation (MD or MS or M Sc inMedicine) can go for Ph D in any specialised area of medicine. MD or MS holders can complete the Doctoral Programme (Ph D) in 2 years and M Sc Medicine holders in 3 years.
All these branches of specialisation add to the qualification of doctors. And the employment opportunities thereafter they find can broadly be categorized as below:
• In Government or private hospitals
• In nursing homes/clinics/health departments
• In medical services of the army, the navy and the air force, under the Ministry of Defense
• In charitable institutions
• In medical colleges and training institutes as teachers
• In research institutes and medical colleges as researchers
• In the industrial sector
• Private practice/self employment.
Furthermore, they also become eligible for better jobs in prominent hospitals abroad. Some of the countries like Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE hire doctors from India at higher pay. Even in United States and Europe, doctors from India are regarded with high esteem. The solid reputation of Indian doctors and the validity of courses and their frequent up gradation contributes a great deal in making medical profession a financially viable one for them, with an added factor of respectability. The world over, doctors are treated with special regard because of their ability to help the people to lead a healthy and contented life.
The need and demand for medical professionals are on enormous rise in recent times as the super specialty hospitals are burgeoning both within the country and abroad, thereby, opening up new avenues of employment for them. The doctors are also drawn towards these state-of-the art medical establishments as they offer better working conditions, more salary package, and greater opportunities of research with recognition for work.
Medicine is a challenging profession, but rewarding as well.

Cut off rank of BHU-PMT varies from year to year. The examination is well-known all over for its nerve racking competition. For example, in the year 2010, out of approximately 50,000 aspirants only 2,500 candidates have been screened for the main examination of PMT and of these 84 candidates are finally admitted, strictly on the basis of merit ranking.
PMT conducted by BHU is a two-tier selection process; first stage is the screening examination and the successful clearance of this enables student to appear for the main examination.
The PMT screening as well as main test is of three hours duration. The screening test is held on a question paper comprising of 200 objective (MCQ type) questions, 50 each from Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. All the three levels of questions (easy moderate, and difficult) are almost equally distributed. Each question carries one mark. There is a provision of negative marking for every incorrect response. However, answer without a response will not be considered for negative marking.
The PMT main examination is held of a subjective type question paper consisting of 200 questions from the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (Botany and Zoology).
The general standard of the Examination is that of 12th class under the 10+2 Scheme/ pre- medical/intermediates science or an equivalent examination of an Indian University.
The question Paper of the test is provided either in English or Hindi to the candidate according to their choice.
Distribution of Questions and Marks in BHU-PMT

For the purpose of admission into MBBS course, BHU declares Merit lists in different categories, strictly on the basis of the marks obtained by the students in entrance test. At the same time, respective waiting lists are also declared. If a candidate does not or fails to take admission, system is to fill the seat by the next candidate of the respective list.
No specific syllabus for the MBBS entrance examination has been prescribed by BHU, However, the question paper for the examination has an extensive coverage of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The general standard of the Examination is that of 12th class under the 10+2 Scheme/Pre-medical/ Intermediates science of UP Board/CBSE or an equivalent examination of an Indian University.
To succeed in BHU-PMT Entrance 2011, one should start preparation at least one year in advance that is, from 2010 onwards. For, the students need to prepare for the Class XII board exams alongside the entrance test which is considered as toughest of all medical entrances in India. Again, getting good marks in Board examinations is also important as it being the qualifying examination without which the students cannot take any of the entrance tests. Hence, from the very beginning they should have a clear cut study plan in place.
As the exam is of both objective as well as subjective types, first they should concentrate on being conceptually extremely sound. For that matter they should thoroughly study NCERT and ISC text books and various resource books.
Once the subject-wise basic preparation is over, they should solve the question papers of past few years repeatedly to get well-versed with the examination process and trend. It will also help them to learn time-management tactics. For final and ultimate preparation, they should go for the mock test, as much as possible. This will prepare them to face the actual examination with confidence.
In fine, Hot-Tips for 2012 BHU-PMT entrance test can be summed up as below:
• Revise the theory portion as much as you can.
• Recollect important points and frame questions of your own.
• You require more power of recollection to tackle Biology.
• Answer the questions without looking at the options, because options confuse a lot.
• Practice as many MCOs including previous year's questions as you can.
• Take Mock tests close to actual testing condition and time yourself.
• Face the exam with a calm and composed mind.
And these would definitely help to score maximum possible in the exam.
