The Vellore Institute of Technology or simply VIT is a coeducational university located in Vellore Tamilnadu, India. The University offers 16 undergraduate and 30 postgraduate programs with an emphasis on engineering and technology and has 13 research centres that span over diverse disciplines. VIT is the first institution in India to acquire international certifications for Its programmes.
The university was founded in 1984 by G.Viswanathan, who is also the current chancellor, with an aim of providing quality higher education on par with international standards. The institute persistently seeks and adopts innovative methods to improve the quality of higher education on a consistent basis. The VIT campus is spread over 250 acres of land on the Ranipet, Katpadi road at Vellore, situated between two important cities Chennai and Bengaluru. The campus has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with students from all corners of the globe.
Teaching at VIT is structured around nine schools of study; B, Tech programme is offered in 12 separate disciplines. A student has to register in one of the schools, depending on the degree/programme he/she is interested in pursuing. The institute follows the semester pattern. An academic year consists of two semesters. The Fall (Odd) Semester begins in June and the Winter (Even) Semester in December. The academic schedule mentioned in the academic calendar is followed strictly.
It is a custom in VIT to monitor the progress of the students at a closer level, through a system called Proctor Scheme. Under this scheme about 20 to 25 students are assigned to a faculty who maintains a record of the academic progress (Proctor Diary) of the students and provide guidance and counselling, as per individual need.
So far as admission process is concerned, the University follows a transparent mechanism. It administers its own entrance examination - VITEEE (VIT Engineering Entrance Examination) - at 96 cities across the country, including at 3 overseas centres in Dubai, Riyadh and Singapore. The exam, which is an objective type MCQ pattern, is conducted around the month of April, every year. With each passing year, VITEEE (pronounced as "WITTY") has been gaining in popularity; in the year 2010 more than 150000 students from all over India took part in VITEEE, At present the Institute operates from its Vellore and Chennai campus. The courses offered at the two centres are as follows:

VITEEE is an objective type test of a Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ), where in each of the Questions is provided with 4 options, only one to be the correct answer. The paper contains 4 parts; Part I Physics, Part-II Chemistry, Part-III Mathematics and Part-IV Biology. Candidates are to answer either Part I,II and III or Part I, II and IV. Each of the Part is having 40 questions and each question carries 1 mark. The answers are to be marked in OMR response sheet. There is no provision of negative marking for the wrong answers. The questions are of 10+2 standard, although VIT prescribe specific syllabus for the test. The duration for the test is 2 & 1/2 h and question paper is set in English language only.
| Part | Subject | No. of Q. | Mark per Q. & part | Negative Marks | Duration |
| I | Physics | 40 | 40x1=40 | Nil | 2 & 1/2 |
| II | Chemistry | 40 | 40x1=40 | ||
| III | Mathematics | 40 | 40x1=40 | ||
| Total | 120 | 120 |
VITEEE 2011 was quite easy in comparison to 2010 exam. There were no surprises in the paper. Of PCM, Mathematics portion was tougher than the other two and had been the deciding factor in final merit ranking. Chemistry portion was easiest. Portion on Physics was average and there were no lengthy numerical calculations.
