The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is one of the oldest premier Central University of India with a unique and rich culture of its own. It owes its existence to the selfless and untiring efforts of the great visionary Sir SyedAhmed Khan. In 1875 he founded a High School at Aligarh, which, within three years, was raised to a College known as Mohammadan Anglo Oriental College that metamorphosed into Aligarh Muslim University in 1920 through an Act of Parliament. Today, AMU ranked 8th among Indian Universities.
The University has 13 faculties offering courses in number of disciplines, out of which the Faculty of Engineering and Technology is the largest. The University also maintains a number of Colleges, Institutes, Centres and Schools. Admissions in all the courses are done on the basis of rules framed by the Academic Council for each course as amended and enforced from time to time.
The distinguishing feature of this University is its pre-dominant residential character. Students are normally allocated a Hall of Residence at the time of admission. A Hall of Residence is a cluster of hostels administered by a Provost and are centres of corporate life in the University encouraging self governance among students. Facilities such as Reading Room, Common Room, indoor and outdoor games are available in almost all Halls of Residence. Accommodation to students allocated a Hall of Residence will be provided as per the policy / rules laid down by the University, subject to the availability of seats in the hostel.
Local students or those who are not desirous of residential accommodation are designated as non-resident students. Non-Resident male students are allocated Non-Resident Students Cehtre(NRSC) while the female students are attached with one of the Hall of Residence for women students.
So far as the under graduate courses in engineering (B.Tech) is concerned, it is offered in 7 branches; namely (i) Chemical Engg. (ii) Civil Engg. (iii) Computer Engg. (iv) Electrical Engg. (v) Electronics Engg. (vi) Mechanical Engg. (vii) Petrochemical Engg.
Every year AMU conducts an entrance examination for admission to these courses, which is taken by the students from all over the country. 6 test centers are offered for the purpose in different cities of India. The notification for the test is normally published in the month of January- February, in all the major National News
Papers. Besides that one can keep track of the official website of Aligarh Muslim University for the latest updates on exam notifications.
The test is objective in nature in which the candidates are required to answer questions on Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics. The test is usually held during the first week of May & the medium of the test is English. Following is the intake in different branches of Engineering & admission fees of AMU, given in table format.

AMU Engineering Entrance is an objective type test of MCQ pattern questionnaire. The paper consists of questions from Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics. Each of the questions is provided with four options, only one being the correct response. Every question is of equal marks. While each correct response will fetch 1 mark, every wrong response will invite a negative marking on 0.25. Again, selecting more than one response against a question will also be treated as wrong response.
Answers are to be marked in OMR sheet with a ball point pen, preferably black. The-general standard of the test is that of 10+2 and the medium is English only.
Apart for this, students aspiring for admission to B Arch course need to appear in an aptitude test.
