With the merit list for joint admission to city engineering colleges being declared on Monday, Computer Science Engineering turned out to be the first choice of students, who have secured high ranks in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE).
The merit list for admission to PEC University of Technology, Sector 14, University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) in Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology (CCET), Sector 26, University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET) in PU, Swami Sarvanand Giri Panjab University Regional Centre, Hoshiarpur, (SSGPURC) and Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA), Sector 12 was declared on Monday.
In the All India category, the opening and closing ranks for Computer Science were 1,070 and 2,480 respectively for PEC; 4,842 and 13,630 respectively for UIET and 5,595 and 8,391 respectively for CCET.
The cut-off ranks (both opening and closing) for nearly all the institutions has gone up this year, compared to last year (see box).
Second in the line of preference for all students, going by the records, is Electronics Engineering followed by Civil Engineering.
In the Chandigarh category, the opening and closing ranks for Computer Science were 771 and 1,901 respectively for PEC; and 16,622 and 28,490, respectively for CCET.
For CCA, meanwhile the opening and closing ranks in the All India category were 133 and 249 respectively.
Students will have to pay the admission fee online by July 11. Even those who do not get any suitable seat or are not satisfied with the seat allotted in the first round of counselling will have to pay the fee to ensure participation in the second and third rounds.Convener of the Joint Admission Committee (JAC), Prof Sukwinder Singh, said: “This time we tried to make the process simpler for the students by introducing the provision of online fee payment”.
Earlier, the students had to shuttle through the institutions for the payment of the fees after every round of counselling, but now the process will be a click away,” added Singh.
While for CCA and UICET, Rs 10,000 has been specified as the provisional fee, to be paid during counselling, for all the other four departments the amount has been set at Rs 45,000.
